Our Beech Mountain Misadventure

How my birthday trip to the NC mountains turned into one giant misadventure. But what is life without the adventures

  • Started out by letting the GPS take us on US-221 out of Blowing rock. The second we started on the road we remembered that we avoided it returning from Land of Oz in the Fall. 🗺️
  • Got settled into the condo we rented after dropping Zach off at Beech Mountain Resort to go snowboarding. Only to get a text from him saying he fell on his fourth run and broke his collarbone. 🏂
  • Cleared the snow off the truck from the crazy winds and went back to Beech Mountain Resort to pick him up from ski patrol, passing a couple cars off the road as I went. ⛑️🩹
  • Load him up, get the address for the nearest hospital to go get x-rays. Almost slid into the back of a tow truck pulling a car out of the ditch on our way down the mountain. 🩻
  • Make it not even halfway down the mountain when we get an alert on the GPS that the road is closed to the hospital. 🏥
  • Carefully find a spot to turn around and head back up with mountain towards the condo. Thankfully following a plow truck and pass even more vehicles off the road. ❄️
  • Stop by Fred’s General Mercantile for essentials; alcohol, pain meds, frozen pizzas, oreos and water since we weren’t sure when the storm would let up. 🍻💊🍕🍪
  • After a few white outs, we made it to the condo and survived for the night. Lovely condo by the way. Highly recommend Life’s A Beech Condo maybe just not during a snowstorm). 🏘️
  • In the morning, cleared the truck back off and load everything up. With none of the walkways or stairs cleared, Zach takes one step going downstairs to the truck and proceeds to slide down every single one, hitting his head like in a cartoon on every step. Even had an audience of mom and kids. 🤬
  • Help get him into the truck and drive around to leave the complex. Except overnight people left their cars wherever they wanted and the way I took around the complex was now blocked. Tried to back up to another “path”. Only to realize that the back tires were now off the paved parking lot and we were stuck. ⚠️
  • Zach was able to get out and with much direction, guide me back onto the parking lot and down to the other roadway. Thankfully we were able to make it out of the complex and down the mountain. 🏔️
  • Knowing we didn’t want to end up back on US-221, but of course not remembering the name of the road. Just knowing we wanted to get to Boone to get 321. I chose the wrong option and we ended up on a road very similar to US-221. It was a gorgeous drive though and with little traffic it wasn’t an issue with the truck. 🌤️

And that (I think) is all the craziness we went through in a 36 hour timeframe that was supposed to be a nice relaxing day for me and a fun day of snowboarding for Zach.

They trip wasn’t all bad. I was able to make a stop by the First Chair Coffee Shop near the entrance of Beech Mountain Resort. The shop is cute, has some cool mugs, apparel and stickers for sale, as well as delicious coffee.

Made it to Fred’s General Merchantile twice and they have everything in there. It’s an old house and the downstairs is a deli and ski and snowboard rentals. Then the main floor is part retail, part hardware store and part grocery store. If Fred’s doesn’t have it, you can probably survive without it until you get home.

This was definitely not the trip that we had planned, but it will be a trip that we remember forever!
