On our drives down through the Keys, we have always wondered about the abandoned train tracks and bridges. What was the story about the train? On our last trip to Key West, I happened to find this book in an art gallery on Duval Street and ordered it to read as soon as we got home.
The Book
I was completely captivated by this book and could barely put it down once I started it. It is nonfiction, but really reads like fiction. Before I read this, I didn’t know anything about Henry Flagler, but knew that the Flagler name was commonly used in the state of Florida. And of course that all makes sense now.
And while this book focuses a lot on the portion of the railroad from Miami to Key West; the portion that crosses the ocean. It does talk about how Henry Flagler built the railroad down the eastern side of Florida to begin with and in turn built quite a bit of the state.
Why You Should Read It
This truly is a book of adventure. It showcases the struggles that workers had to go through to make the railroad possible; building with different materials, hurricanes, insects, etc. The struggle Henry Flagler had to convince people that a railroad over the ocean was even possible and why he thought it was needed.
