A Stay at Uhuburg Castle in Helen, GA

Uhuburg Castle Great Hall

Zach and I took a late Anniversary trip to Helen, GA in December to go to the Christmas Market and stay at Uhuburg Castle. While we liked visiting Helen, staying at the Castle was truly the highlight of the weekend.

Arriving

The castle is located about one mile outside of Helen, GA, up a winding mountain road. When you arrive at the gate, guests staying on the property are provided with a gate code. Once the gates open, you continue up another winding road, and just as you near the top, the castle gates come into view, along with a large fountain that immediately sets the scene.

Arriving at Uhuburg

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by staff who helped us bring in all of our luggage and provided a short tour of the property. This is not like a typical hotel where you simply check in and head to your room. We were shown the secret passage used to enter when the gates are closed, given a tour of the castle’s common areas, shown how to operate everything in our room, and provided with a map of the property with encouragement to explore.

To top it all off, there were chocolates on our pillows and fresh-baked cookies waiting in the lobby.

Complimentary Breakfast

I highly recommend attending at least one of the complimentary breakfasts during your stay. The food is incredible, and it’s a great opportunity to mingle with other guests and ask the owner any questions you may have about the castle, why he built it and what his future plans are.

We really enjoyed our time talking with Bob, and it’s clear that an incredible amount of thought and intention has gone into every detail of the property.

The Castle Grounds

As soon as we dropped our bags, we grabbed the map and set off to explore the castle grounds. We climbed into every tower, walked along the wall walkways, and continued discovering new features each time we circled the property, from the fairy grotto to the animal downspouts.

Good to Know

  • Not a traditional hotel: Uhuburg Castle is an immersive experience rather than a standard hotel stay. Expect personalized service, unique spaces, and a property designed for exploration.
  • Stairs and walking required: The castle has multiple levels, towers, and wall walkways. Be prepared for stairs and uneven surfaces, especially when exploring the grounds.
  • Packing tip: While staff can assist with luggage using a wagon, all rooms require stairs. Packing light will make getting settled much easier.
  • Limited number of rooms: With only seven chambers available, booking in advance is highly recommended—especially during events and holidays.
  • Weather matters: Much of the property is outdoors. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are a must, particularly in cooler or rainy conditions.
  • Great for curious guests: If you enjoy asking questions, learning the story behind unique places, and chatting with fellow travelers, the complimentary breakfasts and common areas are a highlight.
  • Day visits available: Even if you can’t stay overnight, guided tours and day visits offer a great way to experience the castle.

A Unique Stay

Uhuburg Castle is truly a special place. If you enjoy discovering unique destinations or one-of-a-kind accommodations, this is an experience that should absolutely be on your list.
