Adventure Tips: Traveling with a Dog

We love to travel with our miniature schnauzer/yorkie mix, Gannicus. And luckily he likes to travel and tends to handle it well. But we have still learned some tricks that make it easier.

What to Bring When Traveling with Your Dog (Amazon paid links included)

Pop Up Crate

This option may not work for everyone, but with Ganni being less than 20 pounds it is great to have on hand when needed. He typically sleeps in bed with us, so a lot times it doesn’t get used, but it is great to have in case we get in a situation where we need to separate him from others.

Water Bottle with Bowl

One of the big things we watch out for when we travel with Ganni, is him overheating. Since typically that means he is spending more time in the car or more time outside, we want to make sure that he is getting enough water. So every time we stop somewhere we make sure his water bottle is full and take the time to give him some more water. Having a bottle with a built in bowl makes it all easier.

Blanket

Ganni loves blankets, so we carry at least one with us in the car or in his backpack. If nothing else it allows us to make him a comfortable spot in the back of the car, in his crate or where ever he lays down.

Toys

Don’t forget the toys. Of course we talk to Ganni like he can answer us, so when we are packing we “let” him pick what toys we pack.

Gates or Dog Run

When we go camping, we make sure that we have a way to let Ganni get some exercise without us having to watch him every second. Zach made gates out of some old fixtures from work, so we take those with us. We also have a dog tie out/run that we can stake or hang between trees.

Pet First Aid Kit

Thankfully we have not had to use this first aid kit yet, but its good to know that we are prepared if we need it.

Backpack

Of course you need a bag to carry all of the supplies, right? We have a bag that we keep ready for whenever Ganni goes to stay with others or we are traveling. It has poop bags, food, bowls, toys, wipes, water bottle and anything else that he might need. And he gets so excited when he sees us get the bag out because he knows it means that we are going somewhere.

Of course there are always other things to pack and I’m sure that I am missing some, but these have gotten us by so far. Let me know if you have any other suggestions!
