A Local Adventure: Alpaca Yoga at Good Karma Ranch

Mom and I did something a little unexpected this weekend. We took part in Alpaca Yoga at Good Karma Ranch.

Good Karma Ranch is a family run Alpaca farm just outside of Charlotte in Iron Station, NC. They offer many ways to visit their farm and spend time with their lovely alpacas, yoga is just one of them.

Good Karma Ranch offers yoga with their alpacas a few times a month. The hour long yoga session in their pasture cost $25 and is great fun. There is nothing quite like trying to do yoga while listening to the alpacas bicker at each other over their alfalfa.

To start the yoga session, Shelly, the owner of the farm, goes through some tips about being around the alpacas. Basically to stay away from the back legs because if you touch their back legs, they will kick out of instinct. I have seen videos of goat yoga before where the goats are literally climbing all over people while they are trying to do yoga poses.

Our alpaca yoga session was not like that at all. The alpacas were pretty standoffish and way more interested in the alfalfa than us. There were some funny moments of the alpacas fighting over alfalfa or getting annoyed with the babies for being in their space. They make some pig like noises when they are squabbling.

Now if you are not that into yoga, but still want to participate, that is encouraged. They have had some people that come and sit on their mats the whole time to watch and interact with the alpacas. They are also great about encouraging you to take photos and videos during the yoga session. They want you to enjoy your time and appreciate the experience of spending time with their alpacas.

Mom and I truly enjoyed ourselves and we can’t wait to go to another yoga session. If you are a person that loves to be around animals and wants to try a new experience, Alpaca Yoga is definitely for you! And don’t worry the alpacas will be way more interested in the alfalfa than your down dog!
